Perched atop a mighty rock, the Caldora Castle of Carpinone is a striking fortress that has witnessed centuries of history. Built during the Norman period, it was expanded and fortified until it became a strategic stronghold under Tommaso da Celano. Destroyed in 1223 by order of Frederick II of Swabia, it was rebuilt in the 14th century by the d’Evoli family and reached its peak in the 15th century thanks to the legendary condottiero Giacomo Caldora.
Today, the castle stands with three surviving towers and a pentagonal layout, making it one of the most impressive fortifications in Molise. But its charm goes beyond architecture: according to historical accounts, it once housed the legendary Caldora treasure, an incredible hoard of coins and precious jewels.
