Perched on the Coste Grandi, the heights that embrace the town of Miranda and offer an enchanting view of the valley of Isernia, stands the simple and intimate chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia. Its construction is relatively recent, but the site on which it stands is steeped in an evocative legend: it is said that it was in a cave nearby that the saint took refuge to escape her persecutors and that there, prodigiously, her effigy was found, which is now devoutly guarded inside the little church.
The chapel has a rectangular floor plan with limited dimensions. The main facade welcomes worshippers with a central doorway, the portal of which is embellished with square, worked stone blocks. On either side of the entrance are two small windows, as if to preserve the intimacy of the place. Above the doorway, a niche houses a delicate white marble high relief depicting St. Lucy, patroness of sight. The top of the facade is distinguished by a distinctive trapezoidal shape with slightly concave oblique sides, culminating in two triangular spurs.
The more sober rear elevation features two symmetrical windows, separated by a decorative element consisting of a graffitied marble slab. The interior, plastered in stucco and painted in muted colors, invites prayer and reflection.
The Chapel of Saint Lucy is not only a place of worship, but also a privileged vantage point. From the Coste Grandi, the gaze sweeps over the entire valley of Isernia, offering a setting of rare beauty that invites contemplation. The legend of the Saint’s refuge and the miraculous finding of her image gives this place a special charm, combining popular devotion with the suggestion of the surrounding landscape. The simplicity of its architecture and the richness of its history make it a significant destination for the faithful and anyone wishing to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of peace and spirituality, while enjoying a breathtaking view of the heart of Molise.
