Just three kilometres from Casalciprano, nestled in a dense forest, opens one of the most suggestive corners of Molise: the Parco dell’Annunziata.. This enchanted place, ideal for excursions, relaxation and moments of contemplation, is the setting for one of the oldest and most significant sanctuaries in the region: the Badiale Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Annunziata, once known as Santa Maria in Castagneto.
The sanctuary has its roots in the thousand-year history of the territory. According to historical sources, its foundation dates back to 680 A.D. The first documented record, however, is from March 897 when Abbot Maione obtained a ruling in favor of the cenobio, cited in the Chronicon Vulturnense.. The monastery was founded by the duchess Teoderada who donated it, together with her son Gisulfo I, to the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno.
Over the centuries, the sanctuary has undergone several alterations but still retains valuable architectural elements. Of particular importance is the large stone coat of arms on the counter-facade with the papal insignia of Urban VIII of the Barberini family, represented by the three golden bees on blue field. The church, entirely in stone, is distinguished by its sober elegance: a facade with a hut, without a bell tower, with two simple portals that correspond to the two inner aisles. The aisles are separated by four round arches resting on massive pillars with geometric capitals. An oculus above the altar lets the light filter through, creating a collected and spiritual atmosphere.
Parco dell’Annunziata is a small natural paradise: paths surrounded by greenery, shaded picnic areas, children’s games, sports fields and fitness equipment make it ideal for the whole family. The ancient fountain and the stone sinks, once used by the women of the village, tell a daily life made of effort and sharing.
In addition to the sanctuary in the territory are worth a visit two other works of sacred art: the wooden crucifix of the eleventh century kept in the church of SS. Salvatore and the eighteenth-century painting of the Madonna in adoration of the Child Jesus by Benedetto Brunetti, preserved in the church of Santa Maria del Giardino.
Between faith, art and nature, the Parco dell’Annunziata represents a perfect balance between historical memory and scenic beauty.
