Located in the upper part of the village of Spinete, the Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption stands out for its plastered façade and classic architectural elements. Built in stone masonry, the church has an irregular polygonal floor plan and a pitched roof, harmonizing with the topography and layout of the Molise village.
The main façade is vertically divided by two pairs of pilasters supporting a molded entablature and triangular pediment. At the center sits a squared stone portal, above which lies a niche containing a painted majolica image of the Virgin Mary, dated 1831 — a precious example of devotional folk art that adds color and spirituality to the building.
Flanking the façade are two small fan-shaped bell towers, each featuring a clock and a gabled roof. To the side rises the main bell tower, with a square base in stone, a belfry composed of four round arches, and a pyramidal roof, giving vertical prominence to the church within the town’s skyline.
The interior is elevated a few steps above the square level and laid out in three naves. The central nave reaches a height of 10 meters and stretches 25 meters in length, while the side aisles are 5 meters high and 20 meters long. The interior space, structured by pillars and arches, conveys a sense of symmetry and calm that reflects the essence of Molise’s ecclesiastical tradition.
The Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption is not only a religious site but also a cultural and architectural symbol of Spinete — a place where devotion, history, and community identity come together through every stone and arch.
