Church of Saint Michael the Archangel: Baroque Elegance in the Heart of Molise

Loading...

In the picturesque village of Fornelli, the Church of Saint
Michael the Archangel stands as a beacon of history, faith, and architectural beauty. Consecrated in 1746, it remains the town’s spiritual heart and a remarkable example of Molise’s religious heritage.

You approach the church via a broad staircase leading to an arched portico, framed by a striking three-tiered bell tower with a tunnel-like base and a pyramidal spire. The effect is powerful—a ceremonial entrance into a sacred space articulated through three naves, where Romanesque simplicity meets baroque refinement.

Inside, the marble altar immediately draws the eye: grand and richly detailed, it sets the tone for the entire interior. Above it, the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel—protector and warrior—commands attention. Nearby, three 18th-century canvases, recently restored, add narrative depth and vibrant color to the sacred space.

Although modern interventions have altered the original vaulted ceiling, the overall atmosphere remains moving and solemn.
During major feast days, the church comes alive with liturgy, light, and local devotion.
