Immersed in the heart of the ancient village of Castelpizzuto, the Church of Sant’Agata is a small architectural jewel full of history and spirituality. Built in the fourteenth century near the medieval castle this church stands out for its sober elegance and deep connection with the origins of the village.
Located in the lower part of the village, at the entrance to the town, the church is separated by a narrow street from the nearby baronial palace, still recognizable today by its cylindrical corner tower. Once upon a time the proximity to the castle was an indication of its strategic and religious importance within the local community.
The building has undergone numerous alterations, especially during the late Baroque period, which have partially modified its original appearance. However, the extreme simplicity that characterizes both the exterior and interior of the church has remained unchanged over time, transmitting a sense of humility and recollection, in line with the Franciscan values of poverty and spirituality.
The structure has a rectangular plan with a single-room longitudinal system and side chapels. The presbytery is slightly raised while the stone masonry is covered with a white plaster that enhances the cleanliness of the architectural lines. The sober and essential hut-shaped façade is enriched by a round arch portal, above which is engraved the date 1594, year of construction of the current building. An inscription on the door, dating back to 1752, recalls the restoration carried out by a certain Libetti, a local artisan.
Next to the church stands the bell tower, probably later than the main building. A mysterious inscription on the bell tower remains difficult to interpret, adding a touch of mystery to the complex.
The Church of Sant’Agata is today one of the symbols of identity of Castelpizzuto, place of worship and memory that preserves the authenticity of a simple and deep faith. Visiting it you have the impression of making a real journey through time, rediscovering the essence of medieval Christianity among the hills of Molise.
