Church of SS. Salvatore in Cantalupo nel Sannio: Baroque jewel in Molise

Loading...

Located in the charming village of Cantalupo in the Sannio, the Church of the Holy Saviour is one of the most significant examples of Baroque religious architecture in the region. Characterized by a classic longitudinal layout, the sacred building is spread over three aisles: the central one, wide and solemn, is covered by a low barrel vault while the two sides have sloping pitched roofs, Contributing to a clear scan of the interior spaces.

One of the most remarkable architectural elements is the Vanvitellian dome, placed at the intersection between the nave and the transept, but which does not protrude from the side aisles, thus giving the plant a certain compactness and symmetry. The interior is embellished by a series of side altars embedded in elegant niches dating back to the eighteenth century, richly decorated with stucco and polychrome marble. The walls are adorned with a refined decoration in classic motifs, with capitals, parastes and friezes that alternate harmoniously, creating a visual effect of great impact.

The presbytery, slightly raised from the floor of the nave, culminates in a high altar on the wall, framed by three niches that highlight its verticality and liturgical importance. The entire interior reflects a balance between architectural rigour and decorative richness, typical of the mature Baroque style.

On the outside, the hut-like facade faithfully recalls the interior layout of the building. The central nave, higher than the lateral ones, is surmounted by a triangular tympanum held by two pillars with ionic capitals, which frame a stone portal dated 1732. In axis with the main portal opens a rectangular window with bevelled corners, while on the sides there are two secondary entrances, which harmoniously complement the facade.

The Church of SS. Salvatore is not only a place of worship, but also a valuable artistic and historical testimony of the Sannion, able to tell through its forms and decorations the evolution of architectural taste and popular devotion of a community deeply linked to their roots.
