Into the Heart of History: Discover the Hidden Caves of Macchia Valfortore

In the hills of Molise, where silence embraces the landscape and memory is etched in stone, lies a surprising underground treasure: dozens of man-made caves carved into sandstone and Pliocene sands. Welcome to Macchia Valfortore, a small village guarding a forgotten world of hypogea, legends, and sacred devotion.

These artificial cavities — 81 in total — are scattered between the village and its countryside. Once used to store wine, oil, or grain, some are still accessible, others slowly being reclaimed by nature. A first cluster lies between Via Cesare Battisti and Via Trento, with 11 caves, seven of which open directly onto the road and four nestled in a wild, vegetated slope. But it’s in the southern part of town that the story becomes truly fascinating.

In the Santa Maria district, beneath the churches of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Maria degli Angeli, more hypogea can be found. The two chapels, affectionately called “a llong” and “a cort” in the local dialect, are more than places of worship — they are landmarks of ancient sight. Legend says that the chapel of Madonna Assunta, perched on a hilltop, is one of the “Seven Sisters,” a line of chapels each visible from the next, with the last allegedly able to see all the way to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Walking these paths is a journey between the sacred and the mystical, between the carved silence of the earth and the whispered devotion of the people. The chisel marks are still visible in the humid stone walls, and stories continue to echo among the grottos. Though no regular tours exist, locals often open their doors during patronal feasts or upon request — a rare chance to step into Molise’s hidden underworld.
Macchia Valfortore is not just a scenic hilltop village above the Fortore Valley — it’s a place where time lives underground, where stones whisper and legends endure.
