Housed inside the elegant Ducal Palace of Larino, the Civic Museum features the permanent exhibition “Ars et Ingenium”, offering a fascinating journey into the ancient history of the region. The artifacts on display mainly come from the Roman Amphitheater area and the Municipium of ancient Larium, as well as from older Samnite-Frentani settlements.
The collection includes vases, amphorae, oil lamps, helmets, spears, unguentaria, and small statues dedicated to Mars, the protective god of ancient Larium. Particularly noteworthy is the sculptural group of Hercules and Priapus.
Among the museum’s highlights are the polychrome Roman mosaics, recovered from aristocratic Roman villas. The most striking is the 3rd-century mosaic depicting the She-Wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, a powerful symbol of Roman heritage and artistry.
The museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the deep cultural and artistic roots of Larino and southern Molise.
