In the quiet heart of Campobasso’s historic center lies a museum unlike any other: MUVES – the Museum of Traditional Dress. More than just an exhibition space, MUVES is an emotional and visual journey through the collective memory of Molise. It was born from the passion and expertise of anthropologist Antonio Scasserra, and is centered around his extraordinary collection of traditional clothing and folk jewelry — a collection recognized by Italy’s Ministry of Culture as a national treasure.
Step inside, and you’re surrounded by fine fabrics, intricate embroidery, and symbolic colors. The museum displays 30 complete women’s outfits and over a hundred individual elements — blouses, bodices, skirts, headdresses — telling the story of Molisan women’s elegance and dignity from the 1800s to the early 20th century. These were dresses for weddings and festive occasions, rich in meaning and tied to the pastoral life of the Matese region.
But perhaps the most striking section is the one dedicated to folk jewelry: over 1,000 gold pieces, mostly made in Agnone, a town renowned for its goldsmithing tradition. These aren’t just beautiful ornaments — they are charged with symbolism, linked to key moments in life like marriage, motherhood, and religious rites. They speak of protection, identity, and belonging.
The museum also features a rare photographic archive of Molisan women in traditional dress, capturing rituals, family life, and quiet strength. It’s a powerful visual diary, telling the story of women as cultural keepers. MUVES is not just a museum — it’s a living narrative, a space where tradition, anthropology, and identity come together to celebrate the soul of Molise.
