San Giovannello: A Corner of History, Faith, and Nature Overlooking Campobasso

Loading...

In the northern area of Campobasso lies the green hill of San Giovannello, a place that preserves an important testimony of the region’s history and spirituality. Once home to a small medieval village—likely destroyed by an earthquake in the 13th century—the hill is now home to a church dating back to 1551, a silent witness to centuries of tradition and transformation.

Although modest in size, the Church of San Giovannello houses valuable works of art, including a 15th-century wooden crucifix and a 17th-century painting of the Madonna della Pietà from the Neapolitan school. These artistic treasures are set within an intimate and evocative space that encourages moments of reflection and quiet, far from the city’s hustle.

Local legend tells of a secret underground passage connecting the hill to Monforte Castle, once used as an escape route by the city’s rulers. Although no longer accessible, this element continues to lend the site a sense of mystery and intrigue.

Each year on August 29th, the hill comes alive with the celebration of Saint John the Baptist, when the community gathers for religious processions, cultural events, and open-air festivities. After years of neglect and vandalism, a recent redevelopment project has restored dignity and value to this green space, making it once again a place to be enjoyed and cherished.
