In the heart of Molise, a few kilometers from Pozzilli, lies Santa Maria Oliveto, a hamlet that still retains the charm of its medieval past. The urban core, with the original perimeter of the defense walls and all the circular towers, testifies with surprising accuracy to its origins dating back to around the year 1000.
The origins of Santa Maria Oliveto are documented in the Chronicon Vulturnense, a valuable historical source that mentions the local church several times, confirming the importance of the settlement since ancient times.
Walking through the village, it is still possible to admire the remains of the small castle that dominated the area. On the eastern side opens the “Portella,” a striking town gate that residents proudly guard. A short distance away, in the locality of Santa Lucia, emerge the remains of the ancient Augustan aqueduct, which once carried water from the Volturno springs to the Roman city of Venafro.
The beating heart of the village is Piazza Seggio, where stands the church of San Lorenzo Martire, patron saint of the village. Inside you can admire the medieval apse depicting Christ and the twelve apostles, precious frescoes and a splendid wooden statue of St. Lawrence, carved from walnut wood.
Today, Santa Maria Oliveto would be in need of restoration work that could give it back the authenticity lost due to architectural changes that were disrespectful of its history. Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating place, where every corner tells a story and invites visitors to rediscover the oldest roots of our territory.
