The Glacial Cirques of Monte Miletto are breathtaking natural formations sculpted by ancient glaciers in the heart of the Matese. Featuring dramatic cliffs and stunning landscapes, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s geological history. On the northern side of Colle Tamburo, the Glacial Cirques of Aquilania are particularly striking and can be admired along the scenic road between Cantalupo del Sannio and Roccamandolfi.
One of the most impressive cirques is Fondacone (1986 m), marked by moraines and ancient beech forests. These unique landscapes are part of the SIC-ZPS protected area “La Gallinola-M. Miletto-M.ti del Matese”, making them an ideal destination for hikers and nature lovers. The CAI 102 trail takes visitors through these glacial landscapes, offering incredible views of the region’s limestone formations.
A must-see highlight is Arca di Pane, home to the Campanarielli, two rock spires reaching up to 1600 m. These bell-shaped formations create an alpine-like landscape and have become a hotspot for rock climbers.
Another fascinating feature is the semi-permanent snowfield beneath Campanariello di Monte, where shepherds once extracted ice blocks to store food and drinks.
For those who love adventure, hiking, and stunning natural scenery, the Glacial Cirques of Matese are an unmissable destination!
