Trivento and Its 365-Step Staircase: A Village to Be Conquered One Step at a Time

Loading...

Nestled in the hills of Molise, in the province of Campobasso, lies a small village that surprises visitors with every step: Trivento. This charming town, whose name reflects the three winds—east, south, and north—that caress it, offers a unique blend of history, tradition, and panoramic beauty.

The highlight? The Scalinata di San Nicola—365 stone steps, one for each day of the year, connecting the lower part of the town to the upper district known as Piano. Whether intentional or coincidental, this numerical symbolism adds a poetic touch to the climb.
As you ascend, each step reveals a new facet of Trivento’s charm.

At the 150th step, pause at Largo di Porta Maggiore to enjoy a panoramic view of modern Trivento and the surrounding mountains. Continue to the 175th step to find Via Roma, a street composed entirely of steps. At the 234th step, you’ll reach the grand square housing the Cathedral of Saints Nazarius, Celsus, and Victor. Beneath the cathedral lies a crypt marking the transition from an ancient pagan temple to a Christian church. Adjacent to the cathedral, the Bishop’s Garden showcases Roman relics nestled among its flowerbeds.

The staircase, recently restored, was designed by local builder Beniamino Mastroiacovo. It gracefully winds between colorful houses, balconies, and cobbled alleys, inviting exploration of hidden corners and quaint squares that open onto the picturesque landscape.

Trivento doesn’t shout its beauty—it whispers it as you climb. In the rhythm of each step, the sun-warmed stone, and the gentle winds that brush your face, you’ll find the poetry of this little village.
It’s not just a walk; it’s an experience that immerses you in something ancient and genuine. And once you reach the top, with the entire valley stretching below, you’ll know it was worth every step.
