Ururi – The “great church” of faith and history

Loading...

Perched atop the highest hill of the old town of Ururi, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie—commonly referred to as the “great church”—stands as the town’s main place of worship and a symbol of enduring devotion. Its commanding position offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and affirms its role as a central spiritual beacon.

Historical studies suggest that this very spot hosted a church dedicated to Saint Mary as early as the 10th century, possibly built by a priest named Filippo. This claim is supported by a donation act from 1026 that references a church under that dedication. Over time, successive churches were built and destroyed, always rebuilt on the same site, preserving the tradition of Marian devotion. Old foundations discovered during recent consolidation works further attest to the antiquity of this sacred location.

The current structure dates back to 1718, made possible by the devotion of the local community and a generous contribution of 400 ducats from Bishop Carlo Maria Pianetti of Larino. The official consecration took place on September 10, 1730, officiated by Bishop Tria. The church has been canonically recognized ab immemorabili, a term indicating its immemorial ecclesiastical status.

Today, Santa Maria delle Grazie embodies the elegance of Molisan baroque religious architecture. It continues to serve as the spiritual heart of Ururi, hosting major religious events and deeply rooted traditions. The church invites visitors not only to appreciate its architectural beauty but also to connect with the spiritual and cultural identity of this small yet resilient community.
