Valle Fiorita, also known as Pianoro delle Forme, is a hidden gem within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, nestled in the municipality of Pizzone at 1,400 meters above sea level. Stretching toward the border with Alfedena, it offers one of the most captivating landscapes in the Central Apennines.
This high-altitude valley is surrounded by dense forests, where twisted, thick-trunked ancient beeches spread their wide canopies over the trails. It can be reached via the scenic Pizzone provincial road or the “Via del Lago” from Alfedena, both routes rich in natural beauty.
Hikers can follow trail M1, which climbs the Valle Pagana to reach the Passo dei Monaci (1,967 m), just below Monte Meta (2,242 m), one of the tallest peaks in the Apennines. Although the summit is off-limits due to its status as a protected Integral Reserve, the approach itself is a rewarding journey through spectacular terrain. Valle Fiorita is a biodiversity hotspot: deer sightings are common
and with a bit of luck, you may catch a glimpse of the elusive Abruzzo Chamois, the iconic Marsican brown bear, or a soaring golden eagle. The area is also rich in alpine flora typical of the Apennine highlands.
It’s a place to explore slowly and mindfully, guided by the sounds of nature and the rustle of leaves underfoot.
