Telling the story of war is never easy, but Venafro’s Winterline Museum succeeds with passion, rigor and humanity. Located in the historic Palazzo De Utris in the heart of the Molise town, the museum was born in 2008 thanks to the efforts of the Winterline Association, founded by Renato Dolcigno and Luciano Bucci, who have been passionate about military history since their youth.
The name “Winterline” recalls the winter of 1943, when the Allies managed to cross the German defensive line “Bernhard-Reinhard,” part of the more famous Gustav Line, which passed right through Venafro. A tragic episode related to that period was the bombing of March 15, 1944, when a mistake led American planes to hit Venafro instead of Cassino, resulting in the deaths of 73 civilians and more than 200 soldiers.
The museum houses a rich collection of original artifacts collected over more than 30 years of battlefield research: uniforms, equipment, personal items and documents. Not only static exhibits: the museum tour is enriched by recreated scenes showing the war from the perspective of both soldiers and civilians. Careful work, the result of extensive research, restoration and cataloguing, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the time.
A special section is dedicated to Wojtek the bear, the Polish army mascot who also crossed Molise during the war, becoming a symbol of resilience and affection among the military.
Visiting Winterline is not only a journey into the past, but an experience full of true stories and testimonies, told with great involvement by Bucci and other members of the association, including Donato Pasquale. In addition to the museum, Winterline promotes events, historical re-enactments, collaborations with veterans and participation in television programs, keeping memory alive and bringing new generations closer to history.
An authentic place where passion is transformed into culture and sharing. Have you ever experienced a museum so closely?
