La Piana dei Mulini is a historic complex located along the Biferno River, the longest and most significant river in the Molise region. Originally, the area hosted a mill and a series of buildings used for processing wool from transhumant flocks that traveled nearby tratturi, such as Pescasseroli-Candela and Castel di Sangro-Lucera. With the decline of transhumance in the late 19th century, part of the complex was converted into a hydroelectric power plant, which operated until the 1960s when it was decommissioned and the area abandoned.
Today, La Piana dei Mulini has been restored and transformed into a Diffused Hotel with 13 rooms furnished with wood and wrought iron furniture, evoking a timeless atmosphere. The rural village, renovated through a territorial enhancement project, also includes a refined restaurant offering contemporary dishes prepared with local products, highlighting the flavors of the Molise territory.
Adjacent to the complex is the Biferno River Park, a rehabilitated and protected natural area, part of a Site of Community Importance (SCI). The park offers a scenic walk along the old mill canal, with small bridges and sluices leading to a river beach where visitors can admire the natural landscape and the stone arches of the old Spina Bridge.
La Piana dei Mulini represents a significant example of historical, landscape, and cultural recovery, deeply connected to Molise traditions and the promotion of small internal communities.
