In the picturesque setting of Guglionesi, a hillside town overlooking the sea, the Palio di San Nicola and the Giostra degli Anelli, part of the festivities dedicated to the saint, takes place every Aug. 7 and 8. The event, resumed in 1994 after an interruption since 1963, has its roots in an ancient tradition called the “caravel,” dating back to the 12th century. This historical event evokes the past and reinforces the cultural identity of the town, which has always been devoted to St. Nicholas, as evidenced by the Romanesque church dedicated to him since 1049.

The celebrations begin on the afternoon of August 7 with the blessing of the horsemen in front of St. Nicholas’ church, followed by the drawing that matches contrade, horses and riders. In the evening, from 9 p.m., medieval games are held, including tug-of-war, sack race, brick walk and egg race.

The next day, August 8, the historical procession kicks off at 4 p.m., led by the Lord of the village and the nobles of the six contrade: Borgo, Calvario, Fontenuova, Macchie, Morgette and Santa Margherita. The procession reaches Porta da Piedi, where the authorities watch the main competition, the Palio di San Nicola.

In the Joust of the Rings, riders riding their steeds must thread iron rings with a long rod, which are progressively reduced in diameter (5, 4 and 3 cm). In case of a tie, a tiebreaker is held with a 4 cm ring. At the end of the competition, the winner is awarded and the procession makes its way to the church of St. Nicholas, where the banner of the palio is symbolically handed over to the church authorities.

The event concludes with performances by flag-wavers, musicians and jugglers, accompanied by a tasting of typical products, making the Palio di San Nicola an event that blends history, tradition and conviviality.
