In the heart of the Mainarde, where mountains whisper stories of silence and light, lies Castelnuovo al Volturno, a village that each year in early September transforms into a stage of art, nature, and memory. Here, the Tracce di Luce Festival takes place, dedicated to Charles Lucien Moulin, a French painter who in 1919 left his Parisian life behind to seek the unique light that only these lands could offer.

Organized by the Centro Indipendente Studi Alta Valle del Volturno (CISAV), the festival is a sensory and intellectual journey through Moulin’s life and work. Every corner of the village becomes a place of discovery: from wild plant walks revealing local flora secrets, to temporary exhibitions narrating the artist’s story and the valley’s heritage, to hikes on Monte Marrone where Moulin built his hermitage—a symbol of his desire to merge with nature.

But Tracce di Luce is more than memory. It is creation. Contemporary artists from various disciplines stay in the village, inspired by the environment and Moulin’s figure, crafting original works that enrich the festival’s cultural landscape. Concerts, theater performances, readings, and workshops engage the community and visitors in a continuous dialogue between past and present, art and life.

Moulin’s figure emerges not only as an artist but as a symbol of inner search and deep connection with the land. The festival thus becomes an occasion to rediscover the value of slowness, listening, and beauty born from authentic encounters with nature and each other.
