Located on a hill between the Biferno and Fortore basins, Campolieto is a small village near Campobasso, rich in history and tradition. Its origins are uncertain: some trace the name to campus leti (“field of death”), others to campus laetus (“field of joy”). It certainly existed as early as the 11th century, at the beginning of Norman rule.
The town developed around the feudal palace, now converted into private apartments. The historic center retains the medieval structure with characteristic narrow alleys, while the newer area has a modern architectural style.
Notable monuments include the 17th-century church of St. Michael Archangel, with a gabled facade, an ornate portal, and a balustrade depicting the saint slaying the snake. The three-aisled interior blends Baroque and Romanesque elements. Also important is the church of St. Anne, adjacent to the former convent of the Discalced Carmelites, restored in 1702. In vico Castello is a 16th-century road cross.
The Palazzo Ducale dei De Capua, once a medieval castle, was fortified by the Counts of Borrello in the 12th century and transformed into a noble residence with Baroque elements in the 16th century.
A particular attraction is the Museo dei Fuochi d’Artificio, which tells the story of the pyrotechnic tradition linked to the Paradiso family. In the surrounding area, the rural churches of San Marco and Santa Maria delle Grazie are worth a visit, from which you can admire splendid views.
There are numerous local festivities. On July 26, Sant’Anna is celebrated with “Il Giglio”, an auction during which gifts such as biscuits and wine are offered. On September 29, the patron saint San Michele Arcangelo is celebrated, while New Year’s Eve is enlivened by “La Maitunata”, a popular itinerant song. Another tradition is the “Pasquetta” on January 5 and 6, when groups of young people sing door to door until morning.
Finally, the local gastronomy offers typical dishes such as Crejuoli, a fresh pasta similar to maccheroni alla chitarra, usually seasoned with meat sauce. Campolieto, with its historical, cultural and culinary heritage, is a destination that deserves to be discovered.
