Cantalupo nel Sannio: on the sheep track between village and mountain

Down the mountain of the Matese Massif lies Cantalupo nel Sannio, a village rich in history and traditions. The name derives from the Bulgarian terms Kan (Cape) and Teleped (Residence), as evidenced by the necropolises of the 6th century AD discovered between Sepino and Bojano.

The first documented attestation dates back to 1011, when Astenolfo, Prince of Benevento and Abbot of Montecassino, received the Church of Sant’Andrea as a gift. Over the centuries, the fiefdom passed to various noble families, including the Sanframondo and the Carafa. Surrounded by wooded hills and dominated by the Matese, Cantalupo offers natural scenery ideal for excursions.

Among the places of interest, the Church of San Salvatore stands out, with three naves, which houses the statue of Sant’Anna, which miraculously remained intact during the earthquake of 1805. This event strengthened popular devotion, giving rise to celebrations in her honor. A short distance from the town center, in the Taverna hamlet, is the Church of the Madonna del Carmine, built in the early 1600s. Every July 30, the community organizes a procession in which the faithful make three laps around the sacred building.

The area offers numerous paths for nature lovers, who can explore the lush vegetation up to the peaks of Matese. Local festivities play a central role in the life of the town: from July 25 to 27, Sant’Anna is celebrated, on August 6 San Salvatore, at the end of August the Beata Vergine del Carmine and on September 19 the Addolorata. Also important are the traditional fairs, including that of San Gennaro (September 17) and Sant’Andrea (November 27), opportunities for meeting and cultural exchange.

Cantalupo nel Sannio, with its mix of history, art and nature, represents a fascinating destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of Molise.
