Casacalenda, the ancient Kalena, is a Molise village rich in history, traditions and art. Among its curiosities is the passage of Hannibal, who camped in the nearby town of Geryon, where important archaeological finds have been unearthed.
The origin of the town is uncertain, but an Oscan or Roman foundation is speculated. Casacalenda has played a prominent role over time, such as in 1799, when it was the scene of clashes between revolutionaries and Sanfedists.
The historic center preserves a remarkable artistic and architectural heritage. Places of interest include the medieval ducal palace, several fine churches, and an ancient theater, still a venue for cultural events. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore houses works by Gamba and Solario, while the church of Addolorata stands out for its fine stucco work and polychrome marble altar. The convent of Sant’Onofrio boasts a frescoed cloister with Baroque paintings, including a 1658 Portiuncula of St. Francis.
Casacalenda is also a center of contemporary art thanks to “Kalenarte,” a project that has transformed the village into an open-air museum with installations by international artists. Among the most iconic works is “The Poet” by Costas Varotsos, perfect for evocative shots.
Nearby is the LIPU Oasis, the first established in Molise, which is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, offering ideal nature trails for nature lovers.
There are numerous events and local traditions. “Molise Cinema” is a major summer festival, while St. Joseph’s Day, March 18-19, features a community lunch of legumes after a religious ceremony. On December 31, “maitunate” is celebrated with the bufù, a traditional musical instrument.
Local gastronomy is another feather in the cap: from “ciufele,” handmade cavatelli pasta seasoned with sauce, to “pezzenta,” a legume soup, to Casacalendese-style salt cod, all accompanied by excellent local D.O.C. wines.
Casacalenda is therefore a destination that combines history, art and nature, offering visitors an authentic experience in the heart of Molise.
