In the upper Volturno Valley lies Cerro al Volturno, a charming village in the province of Isernia, dominated by an imposing 15th-century castle. Situated on high ground surrounded by lush forests, the village owes its name to the majestic turkey oak trees found in the area.
The origins of the village date back to the year 1000, when it was founded as an enclosure for food storage. Before 1000 it belonged to the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, which settled a community of farmers there to cultivate the land. With the end of Benedictine rule, the fief passed to various noble families, including the Borrello, Cantelmo, Colonna, Carafa and Pandone families, until feudal rule was abolished.
The most representative symbol of the village is the castle, initially built as a defensive fortification by the abbey and later transformed into a stately residence. Camillo Pandone enriched it with a wall and three round towers. Since 1828 it has been owned by the Lombardi family. Its historical importance is evidenced by the issuance of a stamp in the “Castles of Italy” series in 1980 and by its depiction in an illustration by the painter Escher.
In addition to the castle, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, characterized by a simple and linear structure, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, dating back to 1318, are worth a visit. Walking through the village, one can admire numerous murals created thanks to the initiative of the AMOCE Association, which enrich the streets with open-air works of art.
During the summer, Cerro al Volturno comes alive with the return of emigrants and the organization of traditional festivals. Among the most characteristic is the festival of “soffritto,” a flavorful and fragrant dish served with local wine and accompanied by the cheeses carefully aged by the people of Cerro. This time of year is a perfect opportunity to discover the village’s food and wine traditions and hospitality.
Cerro al Volturno is therefore an ideal destination for those who wish to immerse themselves in the history, art and traditions of an authentic corner of Molise, amidst evocative landscapes and a welcoming atmosphere.
