Gambatesa: frescoed castle overlooking the valley accompanied by stornelli

Gambatesa, a charming village in Molise, combines history, art and traditions in an ideal setting for all types of tourism. Famous for its Renaissance castle full of frescoes and for the New Year’s Eve “Maitunate”, the town offers events and attractions all year round.

The origins of the town date back to the 13th century and its name is attributed to Riccardo da Gambatesa, perhaps belonging to the Molisio family. The fiefdom, initially governed by the Pietravalle family in 1284, later passed to the Galluccio family, the Di Capua family and, finally, to the Ceva (Leva) Grimaldi family, the last feudal lords.

The village develops on a tuff hill, surrounded by olive groves and overlooking a valley. The historic center, in stone, preserves the architectural appearance of the past, with the medieval castle as its fulcrum. This building, more similar to a noble palace than a fortress, is striking for its Renaissance frescoes, the work of Donato da Copertino.

Among the religious buildings, the church of San Bartolomeo stands out, restored between 1887 and 1891, the church of San Nicola and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Vittoria, located one kilometer from the town and renovated in 1707. In the main square there is a stone road cross of considerable historical interest. Numerous events enliven the village. On August 24th the patron saint is celebrated, while March 19th is dedicated to the Holy Family. On June 13th, in honor of Sant’Antonio, a procession with blessing of the animals is held. Particularly evocative is the feast of the Madonna delle Traglie, the last Sunday in July, linked to the celebration of the Assumption on August 15th to invoke a good harvest.

The most beloved tradition, however, is that of December 31st, when the “Maitunate” take place. During this festive night, groups of people go from house to house singing satirical nursery rhymes about the villagers, creating an atmosphere of joy and sharing.

Even the local gastronomy reflects the soul of the territory. The typical dish is “cavatielle al sugo”, handmade pasta seasoned with pork sauce, which represents a symbol of traditional Molise cuisine.

Between history, art and folklore, Gambatesa is a perfect destination for those seeking authenticity and traditions rooted in time.
