Gildone: historic places savoring bread, peppers and new wine

Gildone, a charming village in the Fortore Valley, holds a rich historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Although it may appear isolated, it warmly welcomes visitors, revealing its authenticity from the first encounter.

The first documented evidence of the village dates back to 1079, when Rao Falco Graone donated it to the monastery of Santa Maria Decorata. The origins, however, go back to the Samnites with evidence of a pagan temple found in the countryside of contrada Cupa. Over the centuries, it came under the rule of Lombards, Angevins and various noble families, including Sanframondo, Gambatesa, Carafa and Pignatelli. The place name underwent several evolutions: from “Celidonia” in the 12th century to “Geldone,” to the present Gildone.

Perched on a verdant hill, the village retains its medieval charm intact, with stone-paved alleys and ancient houses. The Parish Church dominates the panorama, while the ancient walls, now incorporated into later buildings, tell its story. Among the places of greatest interest are the corner tower of the city walls, the civic tower with bell tower and the Church of San Sabino, consecrated in 1690 by Cardinal Orsini. Also worthy of note are the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate, which houses a painting of the Umbrian school from 1542, and the Church of San Rocco, characterized by a frescoed façade. Outside the town, the Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie and, above all, that of Santa Maria a Quadrano are worth a visit. Popular traditions are still deeply felt, in particular three events: the Bread Festival, the Giro di San Martino and the Devozione dei Peperoni on August 15. The Bread Festival, celebrated in honor of Saint Anthony, is the most important and features parades and rituals that recall ancient gestures of sharing and faith.

Gildone is a place where history, culture, and tradition intertwine harmoniously, offering an authentic experience to anyone who wants to discover it.
