Perched on a cliff and overlooking the lake of the same name, Guardialfiera is an enchanting village in Molise, immersed in nature and history. Located on the left of the Biferno river, the town dates back to the 10th century.
The origin of the name is uncertain, but it could derive from “Guardie di Alfiero” or “Guardie di Adalferio”, in reference to the Lombard ruler of Larino who conquered the city in 1049. In 1053 Pope Leo IX found refuge there and, to thank the population, donated the first Holy Door of Christianity.
The ancient village, called Piedicastello, develops around the ruins of the medieval castle and is characterized by narrow streets and stone houses. The church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the town and houses an evocative crypt, rediscovered in 1975.
The area is embellished by the artificial lake of Guardialfiera, created between the 1960s and 1970s with the dam on the Biferno, which periodically allows the medieval “Bridge of Annibale” to resurface. The woods of San Martino and San Nazzario offer itineraries immersed in greenery, ideal for nature lovers.
Guardialfiera was the birthplace of the writer Francesco Jovine, who in his novels recounted the life and traditions of Molise between the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the most heartfelt events, the opening of the Holy Door stands out, which takes place on June 1st: after a procession, the Bishop knocks three times on the door with the cross, a sign of the beginning of the rite, followed by the procession with the relics of San Gaudenzio Martire. The closing takes place the following day.
During the Christmas period, the village comes alive with an evocative living nativity scene, while in the summer “Girogustando nel Borgo” takes place, a food and wine event with tastings, exhibitions and artistic performances. The stone working, once renowned, still resists today thanks to the mastery of the last stonecutters.
The local cuisine offers typical dishes such as spaghetti with stale bread and parsley, “miscischia” (marinated and grilled sheep meat), and “cauciuni”, fried sweets filled with chickpea puree. Among the summer specialties, the “sfrngiun” stand out, leavened dough fritters, protagonists of a dedicated festival.
Guardialfiera represents a perfect combination of history, nature and traditions, offering an authentic experience to those who wish to discover the heart of Molise.
