Limosano: ancient village perched in the Biferno valley

Limosano is a village perched on an imposing rock mass that stands out over the Biferno river. Its origins date back to the 10th century, when the town arose along important communication arteries, such as the Traiana-Frentana and Latina roads, elements that underlined its strategic importance. Over the centuries, Limosano has undergone various dominations: initially Lombard, then passed under Norman control and, subsequently, under Angevin influence. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, however, historical sources are scarce, leaving a gap in the reconstruction of the past. Also important is the role of noble families such as the De Capua, the Campanile, the Grimaldi and the Venere family, who maintained the fiefdom until the abolition of feudalism.

The artistic and religious heritage is remarkable. The church of San Francesco d’Assisi, annexed to the Conventual monastery, houses five medallions on canvas that adorn the choir and the presbytery, accompanied by a valuable choir in finely carved walnut. No less important is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, an ancient episcopal seat, which presents itself in an austere and linear manner with its single nave. The church of Santo Stefano, restored in 1626, still preserves the ancient portal and houses a statue of the Addolorata, a work attributed to Carmine Latessa. Further historical testimony is represented by the ducal castle, probably built on a pre-existing Lombard fortress of the 13th century and then transformed into a marquis’ palace.

The historic center, already partly uninhabited since the 1980s, was further affected by the earthquake of October 31, 2002. However, Limosano continues to live thanks to its traditions: woodworking is a historic craft, celebrated through exhibitions dedicated to carved sculptures and paintings. In August, goods and livestock fairs are held, among which the San Donato fair stands out. Among the gastronomic traditions, the “Fegatello festival” is an unmissable event, where cavatelli are enhanced by richly flavored sauces. Recently, the “Cantine Aperte” initiative also allows you to follow a food and wine itinerary among the town’s cellars, offering tastings of typical products.
