A few kilometers from Campobasso, Mirabello Sannitico develops on a hill 600 meters above sea level, framed by suggestive alleys that tell its history. The town, originally an outpost to defend the Monastery of Santa Maria di Monteverde, owes its name to the Latin Mirum bellum, with “Sannitico” added later to distinguish it from other municipalities. Probably founded in the Lombard era, it was first part of the County of Bojano and then of that of Molise, passing under the dominion of various noble families, including the D’Alemagna, the Gambatesa, the del Balzo and the Frangipani. The historic center houses the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to ancient times, but rebuilt in 1876 after the earthquake of 1805. Inside, an altar in polychrome marble, a silver cross and a painting depicting the Virgin with Saint Nicholas and Saint Peter stand out. Also worthy of note are the Church of San Giorgio, located on a hill, and that of the Annunziata, founded by the Frangipani and restored after the earthquake. Nearby, shared with Vinchiaturo, stands the Church of Santa Maria di Monteverde, near the remains of the ancient settlement of Ruffirium.
The most heartfelt event is the patronal feast of San Giorgio. On the night between April 22 and 23 and April 16, the streets are lit up with traditional bonfires, called laure, which give the village a suggestive, almost surreal atmosphere. On the day of the feast, it is customary to prepare zeppole and fiadoni, typical dishes of the local tradition. Among the gastronomic specialties, snails in sauce and taccozze with beans also stand out, simple dishes but rich in authentic flavors.
Mirabello Sannitico, with its history, its traditions and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants, represents a small jewel of Molise, perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of times gone by.
