Montelongo: slow pace, traditions and sea views

Montelongo is a small Molisian village nestled among hills, olive trees and cultivated fields, with the sea visible on clear days. Rich in history and traditions, it faces today the phenomenon of depopulation that threatens its social fabric.

Rising in the ancient territory of the Frentani, of which Larino was the capital, the village developed in the 11th-12th centuries with the urbanization promoted by the bishops and the Lombards. This led to the disappearance of Benedictine cells and the emergence of parishes in the towns. In the 18th century Montelongo was divided into three main districts: the Terra, the Costa and the Croce, a distinction that reflected the coexistence of different ethnic groups, including Byzantines, Latins, Spaniards and Slavs. During the 1800s and 1900s, two more contrade were added, resulting in today’s village structure.

The most heartfelt event is the Palio delle Contrade, held on August 16 in honor of St. Roch, the village’s patron saint. The five contrade compete with twenty horses in an adrenaline-fueled race, determining the winner based on the best race time. Another characteristic celebration is the Feast of St. Anthony, during which floats decorated with flowers and pulled by oxen parade in procession.

Notable monuments include the Church of San Rocco, built around 1500 by the Schiavoni and later enlarged. Also worth a visit are the Church of Santa Maria ad Nives, dating from the early Middle Ages, and the chapel of Santa Maria delle Rose in Saccione.

Local gastronomy is simple but tasty, with traditional peasant dishes such as corn focaccia with beans, panecotto with onion, oil and chili, and acquasale, dishes that tell the authentic soul of Montelongo.

Between history, culture and genuine flavors, the village continues to cherish its roots, making every visit a richly evocative and authentic experience.
