Pietracupa: the Bethlehem of Molise around a rock

Pietracupa, nicknamed the “little Bethlehem of Molise” because of its extraordinary rock formation, is located in the heart of Molise, in an area characterized by Cenozoic outcrops. Its origins date back to the 6th century AD, when natural caves were inhabited by monks. Over time, the village became a fief of several families, including the Carafa, Gaetani, Bracia and Francone families.

The main attraction is the Church of St. Anthony Abbot, which dominates the surrounding area and houses an impressive crypt. The latter, initially used as a dwelling, was later turned into a court of the Inquisition, a prison and finally a place of executions. Inside the church stands out a wooden crucifix from the 1500s, missing its arms, recovered from the garbage.

Also worth visiting are the Church of St. Gregory Pope, located on the edge of town, and the Museum of the Cliff, dedicated to instruments of torture, with an explanatory photo gallery. Two other museums enrich the cultural offerings: The House of Memories, which collects objects from the local ethnographic tradition, and Pietracupesi in the world-their journey, a photographic exhibition on the diaspora of the inhabitants.

Pietracupa preserves four important traditions:

Carnival: a puppet, the symbol of carnival, is carried in a procession by figures dressed as devils and then burned in flames.

The Grape Festival: celebrates the grape harvest with a parade of floats, wine tastings and typical dishes.

The Sunday Mass before Christmas: born by chance in 1991, this celebration in the crypt involves musicians and pipers, who perform traditional and unreleased songs dedicated to the place.

Cartocci and ‘ndocce: on December 24, small lamps called cartocci are lit in the windows, while huge pyramidal torches (‘ndocce), scented with laurel and cypress branches, are carried in procession.

The typical dish is scattone, a combination of pasta, cooking water and wine. Other traditional dishes include cavatelli, leaves and beans, pizza grandign (made from corn) and pork rinds with beans.

Pietracupa is a fascinating village where history, traditions, and authentic flavors come together in a unique atmosphere.
