Pizzone: hamlet in nature among deer and bears

Pizzone, one of five Molise towns located in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, offers a rejuvenating experience between nature and history. Perched on a spur of Mount Mattone at an altitude of 730 meters, the village has origins before the year 1000 and was a fief of the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno until 1300. Over the centuries it came under the rule of several noble families, including the Della Leonessa, Caldora and Pandone families.

The rocky outcrop on which the town stands is crossed by an ancient road used as early as Samnite and Roman times, probably the Numicia or Minucia road. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Mainarde and Meta mountains, with striking naturalistic areas such as Vallefiorita and the Fosse meadows. The beech and maple forests are home to rich wildlife, including golden eagles, Marsican brown bears and deer.

The historic center still retains its three original gates, Porta Lecina, Porta dei Santi and Porta Borea, evidence of the union of pre-existing settlements. Places of interest include the Church of St. Nicholas the Bishop and devotional chapels dedicated to various saints. Of particular note is the Bear Museum, dedicated to the conservation of the Marsican brown bear.

Major holidays include the celebration of the patron saint St. Nicholas of Bari on December 6 and the feast of Santa Liberata on June 10, with solemn mass and procession. In August, the town comes alive with folkloric events that enhance local culture.

Pizzone’s gastronomy is distinguished by the authenticity of its products: dairy products, cheeses, roast kid and lamb, and fresh pasta with mushrooms and truffles. Typical desserts include pizzelle, ferratelle and mostaccioli. The village thus offers a perfect combination of tradition, nature and genuine flavors.
