San Giacomo degli Schiavoni: hilltop hamlet a stone's throw from the sea

San Giacomo degli Schiavoni stands on a hill overlooking the sea, near Termoli. The name recalls its origins: “Schiavoni” indicated the Slavs who settled here in the 16th century, fleeing Turkish invasions.

The town’s roots date back to the 12th century, when the Templars settled here in a small farmhouse located in what is now Contrada delle Piane, near the L’Aquila-Foggia sheep-track, one of the most important in Italy. After the devastating earthquake of Sant’Antonino, part of the population found refuge in the Baronial Palace or in caves dug in the surroundings.

In the 16th century the village was repopulated by Slavs, who worked in the bishop’s fiefs. The caves, initially used as dwellings, became shelters for livestock. Today, San Giacomo degli Schiavoni preserves historical and architectural evidence of great interest.

The symbol of the town is the Clock Arch, known as “u relog,” built in the 16th century and renovated in 2016. Also worth visiting is the Parish of the Most Holy Rosary, which dates back to the 15th century but features late Baroque and neoclassical elements.

Notable sights include the Fountain of Shells and the Roman villa rustica, whose finds date back to the 4th-5th centuries BC. Also noteworthy is the Waldensian Church, founded in 1902. Finally, the ancient caves, used in the 16th century and linked to the town’s history, are a fascinating attraction.

San Giacomo degli Schiavoni celebrates the patron saint St. James and St. Anthony of Padua on August 8 and 9 with moments of prayer and conviviality.

The gastronomic tradition offers typical dishes such as “cacaruozze,” sweets made with eggs, sugar, lemon, flour and milk; “cappuccia,” prepared with savoy cabbage, rib gravy, pork rinds, feet and pork cheek; and country-style slices of veal, a specialty of local cuisine.

This small village retains a fascinating history and strong identity, amid ancient traditions and architectural beauty.
