San Massimo: from the sheep track to the highest peaks in the region

San Massimo is a charming village located at the foot of the Matese, famous for its centuries-old history and its picturesque alleys that offer splendid views of the surrounding mountains and woods. The town is also known for outdoor activities, such as hiking, skiing and sports in general, particularly in the Campitello Matese plateau.

The settlement of San Massimo dates back to the Middle Ages and developed around the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore. Some historians mention it as “Castello” due to the presence of a fortified fortress with walls and access gates. The first evidence of a place called San Massimo dates back to 1113, linking it to De Sancto Maximo, a Norman nobleman considered one of the first feudal lords of the area.

During the 19th century, the town was hit by acts of brigandage and the devastating earthquake of 1805, which led to the reconstruction of most of the structures, with the exception of the fortress. Walking through its historic alleys, some of which still retain their original stone paving, you can visit two significant churches: Santa Maria delle Fratte and San Michele Arcangelo, as well as the Fountain of San Massimo. Not far from the center, on the hill, is the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in the 1930s by the Knights of Malta, whose coat of arms is visible on the door.

At almost a thousand meters above sea level, Campitello Matese is a renowned ski resort, inaugurated in the 1970s, which attracts winter sports enthusiasts with its slopes and ski lifts. Monte Miletto, the highest peak in the Matese chain, rises to 2,050 meters above sea level.

San Massimo hosts numerous events throughout the year, many of which are linked to religious traditions. The most important is the procession on the second Sunday of September, directed to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where celebrations are held in honor of Santa Maria, Santa Lucia and San Giovanni. Other events include the mountain festival in summer, the chestnut festival in autumn and Christmas markets. The area is also famous for its typical products such as chestnuts, mushrooms and truffles, with traditional dishes such as m’baniccia di verdure, pizza di granone and pork with pickled peppers.
