Sant’Elena Sannita, a charming village in Molise, preserves centuries of history and traditions in its alleys. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, with the first documented name, “Cameni”, mentioned in the 13th century. Over time, the town has changed its name several times: from Castello delli Camilli to Li Cameli, until Sant’Elena Sannita in 1896, in honor of Princess Elena of Montenegro, by decree of King Umberto I.
The origin of the name “Cameli” is the subject of debate. According to Giambattista Masciotta, some ironically attributed it to the naivety of the first inhabitants, nicknamed “camelli” or “sciocchi”, a hypothesis denied by the sharp spirit of the community, known for its skilled knife grinders.
Walking through the village, you can breathe in an atmosphere of times gone by. Among the main attractions are the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, with frescoes by De Tollis and a 16th-century statue, and the Church of Addolorata, which houses the “Deposizione” by De Lisio. Also worth a visit are the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the two churches dedicated to SS. Cosma and Damiano, located outside the town. The baronial palace, once a fortress and home of the Orsini family, bears witness to the noble history of the town.
Of particular interest is the Ortapiana fountain, an ancient meeting point for the community, where young women drew water and their first loves were born. Another peculiarity of Sant’Elena Sannita is its connection with the world of perfumes: the town is home to the Perfume Museum, which tells the story of the tradition of local perfume artisans.
Sant’Elena Sannita is also a land of authentic flavors, celebrated in numerous festivals and popular celebrations. Among the typical dishes stand out petacce and beans, lamb au gratin, cod with potatoes or onions, coratella with onions, polenta with fried cheese, pancotto, casciatelli and Easter biscuits. Each dish tells the simplicity and authenticity of the local culinary tradition.
Immersed in the quiet of Molise, Sant’Elena Sannita offers a journey into the past between history, culture and flavors, giving visitors an authentic and evocative experience.
