Scapoli, a medieval village in the Volturno valley, at the foot of the Mainarde, is an unmissable destination for those visiting the region. With a limited territory but rich in history, uncontaminated nature and traditions still alive, the town retains an authentic charm.
The origins of Scapoli date back to the 9th century, when the settlement of Castrum Scappìli arose on the lands of the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno. Over the centuries, the village passed under the control of various noble families, including the Pandone, the Rendina, the Bucciarelli, the Clavo and the Cestari.
Among the main attractions, the Palazzo Marchesale dei Battiloro stands out. From here you can access the suggestive Cammino di Ronda, a panoramic route that surrounds the rock on which the village stands, offering a breathtaking view of the Mainarde and the surrounding villages. Another essential stop is the Museo della Zampogna, which bears witness to the centuries-old musical tradition of the town. Scapoli is in fact one of the few Italian villages where the artisanal construction of bagpipes is still alive, thanks to expert masters who pass down the techniques from generation to generation.
Scapoli is also home to two important events: the International Bagpipe Festival and the Raviolata. The festival celebrates the local musical tradition with the participation of players from all over the world, while the Raviolata, which is held on the last Sunday of Carnival, is an unmissable gastronomic event. The protagonist is the Raviolo Scapolese, a unique specialty for the richness of the filling, composed of dried sausage, chard, potatoes, goat ricotta, smoked scamorza, parmesan and eggs. The condiment is a sauce prepared with goat leg, which enhances the authentic flavor of the local tradition.
Scapoli, therefore, is not only a place of historical and landscape interest, but also a symbol of traditions that resist time, keeping alive its cultural and gastronomic identity.
