Castiglione di Carovilli: between medieval ruins and religious memories

A few kilometers from Carovilli, in the heart of Molise, rises on a hill the hamlet of Castiglione di Carovilli, a place rich in history and charm. Here are the striking remains of the church-castle, a unique testimony to the feudal and religious past of the area.

The name “Castiglione” suggests a Byzantine origin, but it is thanks to the Catalogus Baronum – ancient register of the Norman fiefs – that we know for certain that in the second half of the twelfth century, the feud was owned by Berardo de Calvello. In the 16th century, the territory passed first to the Convent of Santa Maria della Libera di Cercemaggiore and then came under the control of the noble family of the dukes of Alessandro di Pescolanciano who kept it until the end of the feudal system.

Today, on the highest point of the hill, you can see the remains of the fortification: a structure of about 20×10 meters, with powerful perimeter walls in local limestone. Around the 15th century, the castle was abandoned as a defensive structure and transformed into a church, as evidenced by documents kept in the diocesan archive of Trivento, dedicated to San Nicola. In these registers, dating back to the period 1460-1480, you will find the names of the parish priests appointed for the community of Castiglione.

Two stone inscriptions testify to the evolution of the building: one on the lintel of the entrance door, dated 1539, and another from 1720, engraved on the west side of the bell tower. The transformation of the old defensive tower into a chapel is an example of how military architecture has been adapted for religious purposes, reusing the original materials of the castle.

The panorama is magnificent to dominate the surrounding territory, free access and, for those who want, you can climb the bell tower and ring the small bell present.

Around the church-castle, immersed in the vegetation that covers the eastern and northern slopes of the hill, there are also remains of houses connected to the fortified core. These ruins tell of a once flourishing community life, linked to both the defensive and spiritual function of the site.

Castiglione di Carovilli is today a precious destination for lovers of history and archeology, where nature and memory merge in a landscape still authentic and little known. A visit here is a journey through time, among the stones that have seen centuries of Molise history.
