Discovering the “Fairy Walls”: Megalithic Mysteries in Colli a Volturno

Loading...

Did you know that nestled deep in Molise’s wild Volturno Valley lies an ancient Samnite fortress cloaked in myth and mystery? Welcome to the stone fortifications of Monte San Paolo in Colli a Volturno—one of the region’s most intriguing archaeological treasures.

Stretching across over 5 kilometers, this massive pre-Roman wall system winds along the mountain slopes, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Built with huge, dry-laid polygonal stones, some rising up to three meters, the fortress features two ancient gates and panoramic views across the valley. Locals call them the “Fairy Walls”—a name that captures the magic of the place.

Though known since the 1970s, it wasn’t until recent years—thanks to GNSS and laser scanning—that archaeologists truly grasped the full scope of the site. Along the path, you’ll encounter strange altars, black-glazed ceramics, inscriptions, and even a carved viper—likely a relic of the Italic cult of Angitia, a serpent goddess revered in the region.

Some believe this might be the site of Aquilonia, the legendary capital of the Pentri Samnites, conquered by the Romans in 293 BCE. We can’t say for sure—but what we do know is that Monte San Paolo is a goldmine for history buffs and lovers of off-the-beaten-track adventures.

So, if you’re into epic landscapes, ancient ruins, and stories whispered by the wind, lace up your hiking boots and head to Colli a Volturno. The stones here have stories to tell.
