For those seeking an accessible hike that still offers breathtaking views, Serra le Tre Finestre is an ideal destination. Located among the peaks of the Matese massif, this mountain ridge, reaching an elevation of 1,736 meters, is one of the best-kept secrets of the southern Apennines.
The trail, well-marked with red and white signs, leads to a panoramic point known as “Tre Finestre” (“Three Windows”), offering spectacular views of Gallinola, Monte Mutria, Monte Miletto, and the striking karstic doline of Campo Puzzo, a vast grassy basin surrounded by rocky outcrops. On clear days, the view extends from the Adriatic Sea to the Tyrrhenian, and with some luck (and a sharp eye), even the Gran Sasso, Maiella, and Mainarde ranges can be seen in the distance.
Continuing along the southeastern ridge, the trail reaches the Croce di Costa Alta (although official maps may contain inconsistencies in names and elevations), which overlooks the Biferno Valley and offers a clear view of Campobasso and Bojano. It’s an excellent spot for a break and memorable photographs.
The hike can also include a detour to the Capo d’Acqua spring, a perennial source from which a clear stream emerges, flowing through the Campitello Matese plateau before sinking underground and contributing to the Matese Lake.
In just a few hours of walking, it’s possible to become fully immersed in unspoiled nature, surrounded by sweeping vistas and a sense of peace. A corner of the Matese that offers unexpected beauty — even to seasoned hikers.
