SS. del Rosario, the parish between Templars, earthquakes and new beginnings

In the heart of San Giacomo degli Schiavoni, the Parish of Saints of the Rosary is not only the town’s only religious landmark but also a bridge between past and present, memory and rebirth. This peaceful hilltop village in southern Molise has ancient roots connecting it to the Knights Templar, migration, and resilience.

Originally, the area was home to a Templar settlement, located near the L’Aquila-Foggia transhumance trail, in the current Contrada delle Piane. The inhabitants were peaceful people engaged in farming, herding, and animal husbandry.

In 1404, the fief passed to the De Riccardis family, but a devastating earthquake on December 5, 1456 changed everything. The old village and the small church of San Pietro were destroyed. Only a few families survived and found refuge in the Baronial Palace owned by the Bishop of Termoli, Duccio, who was also the feudal lord of the area.

In the aftermath, a new community began to emerge around an old rural church, likely already dedicated to the Madonna of the Rosary. The present Parish Church of SS. del Rosario was later built on its ruins. During this period, immigrants from Schiavonia (modern-day Slavonia), fleeing Turkish invasions, settled here and contributed to the rebirth of San Giacomo. Their presence gave the town its current name.

Today, the parish remains the spiritual and cultural heart of a town shaped by medieval legacy, migration, and Marian devotion, reminding all who visit of a history carved by endurance and faith.
