TERMOLI UNDERGROUND: HISTORY BENEATH YOUR FEET

Loading...

Think Termoli is just about beaches and seaside charm? Think again. Just five meters beneath the old town lies a hidden world of medieval chambers, ancient cisterns, and cryptic symbols carved into stone — welcome to Termoli Sotterranea.

This underground journey starts at the Bishop’s Palace, next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Purificazione. From there, you descend into a maze of rooms once used as shelters, storerooms, and burial grounds. The first stop, the “Warehouse of 1200”, is a treasure trove of fragments — columns, capitals, and even a headless gargoyle that may once have resembled a salamander.

Next, the rainwater cistern surprises with its smart funnel-shaped floor designed to purify water naturally. On its walls, the faint outline of Christ’s monogram remains, a symbol of salvation and perhaps a prayer etched during past invasions.

The most powerful moment comes in the necropolis. Burials are arranged eastward, symbolizing resurrection. Some are “condominium-style” with stacked bodies, others are individual box tombs reserved for the elite. An ossuary was used to make room for the newly deceased. Here, silence speaks louder than words.

The journey ends with the Cathedral’s crypt, where ancient mosaics reveal fantastic creatures and a sealed rectangular space may have once hidden the relics of Saint Timothy. Termoli Underground isn’t just a visit — it’s a story written in stone. A hidden chapter of the town that’s just waiting to be explored.
